Do you ever wish you could just move to a bigger place????
This is the question I find all of our friends are asking themselves. Can we afford a new place??? where would we buy? how much space do we want and how much can we afford. Like many couples I know here in the big apple, we have to sell our place to buy a bigger one. So the questions of numbers start lingering. How much can we sell our apt for, how much is left after we pay the mortgage, can we actually move into a bigger more spacious place with the money that is left without having to move to Harlem, Brooklyn or New Jersey. Co op or condo? East side or West side? Three bedrooms or two big bedrooms? Terrace or no terrace? School district or no school district? Post war or pre war?
Do we buy next door and pay more condo fees, or do we sell and buy something completely different?
Amenities or no amenities? The questions are endless.
New York is an island, we sometimes forget it is because you cant see palm trees and the weather is not cooperating most of the time. But it is surrounded by water, and as soon as you pay the toll you are in Brooklyn, Queens or New Jersey, and you don't want t live in any of these places. You have the urge to live in Manhattan and have the greatest city on the planet at your feet and at your immediate disposal. Real Estate here does not come cheap, unless you want to live up up up in the Bronx or in Harlem and still there you really aren't considered as living in Manhattan.
Condo or Coop? Coops; you get more for your money but why would I want to put myself and my private life on the line to get judged by a bunch of stinky old men so they can decide if my family is apt for their community. Honestly they can go fuck off. East side or West side? West is cheaper. If your life happens on a daily basis on the east think about it. If taking your kids to school will take you 45 minutes instead of 15, is it worth it? The West side is cheaper not only the real estate but also dining and activities. West siders seem to be free spirited and simpler. The East side especially upper East siders are a more complex species. This is why the zoo was put on the East side of Central park and the John Lennon memorial was put on the west. I don't think the East siders on fifth avenue would appreciate the guitarist that chant Beatles songs all day with dreads and stinky bodies. I mean they wanted to kick Pale male out, and he is just a bird. School district? Think about who your kids will be sitting in class with and kissing when they are 15. Then you can decide this one for yourself. Do you want the best education possible for your child without having to spend 34 thousand dollars a year? Believe me once you have kids your living situation moves towards your children's education.
Should buying a bigger apartment feel like you are throwing yourself from a helicopter into the middle of the ocean with your eyes covered and your hands tied??? Is it crazy to want to move to a bigger place without feeling like the city you love, your lover and friend is actually breaking up with you quietly?
